Why free feeding for rabbits is a must do!

Free feeding is the process of laying non-toxic bait on at least three occasions in the control area. This process trains the rabbit to eat the foreign food in the landscape.

It also helps to determine:

  • rabbit behaviour
  • where rabbits are feeding
  • how many rabbits are in the area and how much bait will be required>
  • what animals are eating the bait, e.g., native, feral, or target and non-target.

Note: 2-3 feeds are often recommended, however you may be required to do more. Rabbits are shy when it comes to new things in the environment. They also have a social structure where dominant males ward off other males that are eating.

When undertaking a baiting program, you want as many rabbits as possible to take the bait, so take the time to do the free feeding program.
